  • Termination of employment: In Cyprus, the most important statute related to employment law is the Termination of Employment Law, Law 14/67. This statute regulates the termination of employment, the reasons that an employee may be dismissed and the remedies available to an unfairly dismissed employee.

  • Claims for unfair dismissal: A dismissed employee can bring a claim for damages for unlawful dismissal at the Industrial Disputes Tribunal (IDT). Otherwise, such employee may file a claim for breach of contract at any District Court.

  • Advice on redundancy plans: The Termination of Employment Law 24/1967 introduces the obligation for compensation to redundant employees who have a continuous service of at least 104 weeks. Redundancy compensation to employees is covered by the Redundancy Fund which is entirely financed by employers' contributions (1.2% on employees' gross earnings). The Redundancy Fund covers both individual and collective redundancies. Compensation above the statutory provision is available pursuant to an agreement between employers and employees. However, this procedure is not legally binding.

  • Regulation of the employment relationship: The employer is obliged to inform the employee in writing, within one month after commencement of the employment, of the essential conditions applicable to his contract of employment or employment relationship.
